Getting rid of yellow toilet water

If you see dirty yellow water in your toilet, it’s best to take a look at what’s going on in your toilet tank. Usually, it is something in your tank that is causing your water to discolour. Often the problem happens because metal parts in your tank rust, the particles break off to form suspended thick layer, and when you flush it comes out and sits in your toilet bowl. While there is nothing you can do to stop the rust that flows through your toilet, giving your tank a clean once or twice a year can help prevent build-up.

Before getting your cleaning tools out, try flushing the toilet two or three times. This way you’ll be able get rid of any rust or other limescale and hardwater particles that may be floating around your tank. If the dirty water doesn’t clear, you’ll have to clean your tank with Harpic.

To get started, you’ll need:

• Rubber gloves
• An old toothbrush
• A nylon sponge
• Harpic Power Plus

Follow the methods below:

1. Empty the toilet tank. Locate the water valve that can be usually found behind the toilet at the base of the wall and switch the water off.
2. Flush the toilet and hold the handle down so it drains fully.
3. Clean the stains gently with the nylon sponge to remove the stains.
4. Repeat if needed.
5. Turn the water back on and flush.

For those hard-to-reach places, try using an old toothbrush to scrub away visible hardwater stains. Make sure you scrub lightly, as you do not want to damage any delicate parts of the toilet, as these can be tricky – not to mention expensive – to replace.
